The lower Manhattan courthouse has become an unlikely proving ground for Vice Presidential hopefuls aligned with former President Donald Trump. Figures such as Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla.; North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum; former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy; and notably, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., have all made appearances. Charlie Sykes criticizes this trend, particularly spotlighting Speaker Johnson’s attendance at a felony trial as a significant departure from traditional political norms:
"[It’s] not remotely normal that the Speaker of the House would show up at the felony trial, supporting Trump not in spite of his character, but embracing all of it… We’re seeing a scene in American politics that we have never seen before, and which was unimaginable until the last two days… So much for the party of morality, so much for the party of law and order."
