We have a motto on the ‘Velshi Banned Book Club’: “reading as resistance.” That means when you read, you’re preserving the ideologies and the concepts that are integral to a free society. By reading and by understanding these banned books, you can resist injustice, oppression, and even help maintain democracy. But we need mobilization off the page, too. One of the groups safeguarding the freedom to read and tracking other censorship is the National Coalition Against Censorship — a non-partisan alliance of more than 50 organizations dedicated to protecting free speech — in almost any context, not just fighting book bans. The NCAC has a new initiative called the “Kids Right to Read Network,” fighting book bans at the local level by providing legal support and resources to authors, libraries, and public schools.
