Rep. Geraldine Ferraro of New York accepted the Democratic vice presidential nomination at the 1984 Democratic National Convention, becoming the first woman to be nominated by a major party for vice president. Ferraro was the running mate of Democratic presidential nominee Walter Mondale, who was running against incumbent President Ronald Reagan. "By choosing a woman to run for our nation’s second highest office, you sent a powerful signal to all Americans. There are no doors we cannot unlock. We will place no limits on achievement," Ferraro said in her speech on July 19, 1984.
