Set 300 years in the future where every citizen undergoes a government-mandated plastic surgery to make your face symmetrical, your eyes big and bright, and your body perfect, “Uglies” is a masterclass in young adult dystopian literature. Although the stakes are much higher for Tally and her friends, what they face in their society – choosing individuality over conformity, self-love, the realities of friendship and loyalty, identity, autonomy, and what authority truly means – isn’t much different than what teenagers face today. Perhaps that is why, decades after its initial publication in 2005, “Uglies” still reads as fresh and critical.
