Divorcing abortion care from general maternal health ignores the role of structural racism that prevents Black women from accessing adequate health care, with deadly consequences. “And now here we are, with Amber Thurman and Candi Miller being casualties in this country’s attack on reproductive health care. And they’re not just inconvenienced– they’re dead,” says Jenice Fountain, executive director of the Yellowhammer Fund, which helps women access reproductive care in the South. There’s a long legacy of targeting Black women and their bodies, including forced sterilization, says Georgetown Law global health policy scholar Dr. Michele Goodwin. This history reflects “a disregard for the lives, the wellbeing, the health, the safety of Black women from the time of slavery,” says Goodwin.
