As VP Kamala Harris becomes the first Black woman to run for president on a major party ticket, she follows the path laid by the late Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm. Known as "Fighting Shirley," Chisholm defied societal norms to become the first Black woman elected to Congress. “This is what we mean when we say representation matters.,” says Rep. Jasmine Crockett, only the 2nd Black woman since Chisholm to hold a leadership position in the House Democratic Caucus. “It’s about being able to see yourself in someone else.” “I know that there are other little girls that are looking up and recognizing and realizing that this, too, can be a Black job.”
